Dry Eyes or Mississauga Allergies? Why Summer Is Triggering Your Dry Eye Symptoms

Summer in Mississauga brings warmer weather, outdoor activities, pollen, air conditioning, and increased sun exposure. It can also bring burning, redness, watering, and irritation that make your eyes uncomfortable throughout the day.

These symptoms are often blamed on seasonal allergies, but dry eye may be contributing to the problem. Eye allergies and dry eye can occur separately or at the same time, making it difficult to determine what is causing your discomfort without a professional evaluation.

Is It Eye Allergies or Dry Eye?

Eye allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances such as pollen, grass, mould, dust, or pet dander. Itching is one of the most recognizable allergy symptoms. The eyes may also appear red, swollen, or watery.

Dry eye develops when the eyes do not produce enough tears or when tears evaporate too quickly. Common symptoms include burning, grittiness, sensitivity to light, excessive watering, and fluctuating vision.

Although watery eyes may seem like the opposite of dry eye, irritation can trigger reflex tearing. These tears may not contain the balanced oil, water, and mucus layers needed to keep the eye properly lubricated.

Why Summer Can Worsen Dry Eye Symptoms

Several parts of a typical Mississauga summer can disrupt the tear film. Air conditioning lowers indoor humidity, while wind and heat can cause tears to evaporate faster. Spending more time on digital devices may also reduce blinking, which allows the eyes to dry out between blinks.

Pollen and other allergens can add inflammation to an already unstable eye surface. Rubbing itchy eyes may worsen irritation, while certain oral antihistamines can contribute to dryness in some people.

Signs You May Have Both Conditions

You may be experiencing a combination of eye allergies and dry eye if you notice:

•          Itching along with burning or a gritty sensation

•          Watery eyes that still feel dry or irritated

•          Redness that worsens outdoors or in air-conditioned spaces

•          Blurry vision that improves temporarily after blinking

•          Discomfort while wearing contact lenses

•          Symptoms that continue after other allergy symptoms improve

Why an Eye Examination Matters

Treating every red or watery eye as an allergy may provide incomplete relief. Allergy drops, lubricating drops, prescription medications, and advanced dry eye treatments serve different purposes. Using the wrong product may not address the underlying cause of your symptoms. A dry eye examination allows our optometrist to assess tear quality, eyelid health, inflammation, and possible meibomian gland dysfunction.

Schedule a dry eye examination with Erin Mills Eye Clinic to determine whether dry eye, allergies, or both are affecting your comfort. Visit our office in Mississauga, Ontario, or call (647) 496-9500 to book an appointment.
